If you select the group transfer during Open Enrollment, you must liquidate any HSA investments and turn off any automatic transfers at Smart-Choice.

  • Liquidate HSA investments: On the MyBenefits Smart-Choice website, go to HSA Account Detail > Investment > View/Trade. Select “Move Money” and then select “Transfer Back to Base Account.” Enter the full amount of your HSA investments and select “Submit Request.”
  • Turn off automatic transfers. On the MyBenefits Smart-Choice website, go to HSA Account Detail > Investment. Select “Edit Automated Investment Transfer” and then select “Turn Off Auto Transfer.”

Important: If you do not liquidate your investments and turn off any automatic transfers, your balance will not transfer to Fidelity.

January 24, 2025

The group transfer blackout period begins. If you consented to have your Smart-Choice balance moved as part of the group transfer, you will no longer have access to your Smart-Choice HSA. Be sure to consider any transactions you may want to make with your Smart-Choice account before January 24, 2025.

You can use your debit card from Fidelity to pay for qualified medical expenses with any funds that are already in your Fidelity HSA during the group transfer blackout period.

If you do not have enough funds in your Fidelity HSA to cover an expense, you can pay the expense out of pocket, save your receipt and submit for reimbursement after the group transfer blackout period is completed during the week of February 10, 2025. Please do not use your Smart-Choice HSA debit card during the blackout period as the charge will be declined.

During the week of February 10, 2025

The group transfer blackout period is expected to be complete, and your Smart-Choice HSA balance will be available in your Fidelity HSA. A notification will be sent to your email address once the transfer is complete and you have access to your funds.

This group transfer will not be considered a taxable event and will not be reported to the IRS, though you are encouraged to review applicable rules for your state and consult with a tax advisor.

Beginning March 2025
